The story so far:
It was 1964. January: modest reception to their music in Paris. February: Beatlemania on arrival in USA. 9th February: historic 73 million live audience on Ed Sullivan show. March: Lennon's book, In His Own Write published.
Elsewhere: pirate Radio Caroline starts in March. In June, Nelson Mandela sentenced to life; Lenny Bruce tried for obscenity in New York. In December UK death penalty abolished.
"No band today would come off a long US tour at the end of September, go into the studio and start a new album...and then go on a UK tour, finish the album in five weeks, still touring and have the album out in time for Christmas. But that's what The Beatles did at the end of 1964" Neil Aspinall, The Anthology.
That's another reason why we love The Beatles.
